As far as specific chemical culprits that might cause diabetes, phthalates, a common chemical found in soaps, nail polishes, hair sprays, perfumes, and moisturizers, might top the list. In a study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, researchers found that women with the highest levels of phthalates in their urine had a risk of diabetes that was 70 percent higher than women with the lowest levels of phthalates in their bodies.
